How to Fix File Folders Became Shortcuts

All my files and folders became shortcuts in my 500GB external hard drive while connected to my computer when I attempted to access the data stored. This happened just all of a sudden. It’s really annoying to see that nearly 200GB data now became shortcuts with just about 1-2KB size. How could this happen? Please help me out. I am willing to destroy the drive as long as the data can be recovered.” – Megha William

Ever met similar folders become shortcuts sufferings with your drive? It seems that such problem can be seen here and there on removable disk drive such as USB flash drive, external hard disk, memory card etc. So who is supposed to be the problem maker? Yes, you guess it – can be the virus, trojans or worm and the most famous ones such as BUOUFO, QWERT, AUTORUN etc. Is it possible to get rid of the virus and make the folders become normal again? Yes, you have great chances as long as you stick to the following fix steps or precautions.
First things first - Never attempt to format the drive right away as it may make things worse, particularly if you have much valuable data contained in those files or folders that has turned into shortcuts. Just remember this!

Fix #1: Check if the file folders are hidden.
1> If your PC is running Windows XP, click ‘Start’ -->’Run’ --> type ‘cmd’ and click OK. If you are running Windows Vista/7/8 click “Home + R” combination and type ‘cmd’ and then click OK. Note: the ‘Home’ key is located right besides ‘alt’.
2> Enter this command attrib -h -r -s /s /d f:\*.* (assume your drive letter shows as F: under ‘My Computer’, do not forget to replace it if different).
3> Press ‘Enter’ button and now check if your files or folders in your removable disk.
Are they visible? If YES, congratulations! You are done.
If NO, do not worry, continue to the next step.

Fix #2: Remove the virus.
Then cleaning the problem maker is the most effective and thorough way.
1> Be free to download PC Tools Spyware Doctor (helps eliminate spyware threats with multilayered, award-winning protection, will detect and stop the latest and most malicious spyware attacks) and install on your PC. Then connect your infected USB flash drive, external HD, SD memory card etc to your computer.

2> Open it and give a full scan of the problematic drive. Do not have mercy on those virus or trojans if found.
3> After the virus are cleaned, now re-check the folders on your disk and see if the shortcuts gone.
Now are they normal? If YES, congratulations! You are done.
Still the problem exists, seems the virus or worms are too stubborn? Now go to the final solution.

Fix #3: Recover data and format the virus-infected drive.
1> Keep the drive connected to your PC, then download and install a data recovery software. Run the app for a free scan of your drive to see if there are some files can be found and then recovered. Note: the recovery program performs read-only operation and won’t do any damage to your disk.
2> Then re-format the drive on your PC (use quick format option). This should wipe everything including the virus and your drive will be like new, the folders shortcuts problem will gone forever too. But the data are not erased permanently even if you format the drive.
3> Re-use the data recovery tool to re-scan your drive to see if more data can be found. Do not worry, it only recovers general files such as documents, folders, photos, videos, music etc and won’t touch the virus.

The above steps should help you get rid of such files become shortcuts problem with your USB drive, external hard disk, memory card etc.

Now a days all the people use USB Flash drives like Pendrive, External Hard Disk and Many more. They all skipped DVD, CD and all optical Disc because it takes time to copy and it cannot be reused. So USB Pendrives are now with all people. I used to see all over my college, they hang USB pendrive in their necks. They carry Music, Movies, Datas in that. How USB flash drives improves as the mean while USB virus also increases along with that.
USB PENDRIVE VIRUS
If you have some nasty virus on USB drive that hide all your file in the drive? ie; hides your files and folders, creates exe file extensions of your folders and even corrupt your files. You can view these files by going to Tools>>Folder Options ..But the attributes of these files often stay unchanged even if you uncheck hidden attribute on file/folder properties.
Here i going to tell the Permanent Solution for recovering hidden files by Command prompt in windows operating system.

Step One:

Plug your USB Pendrive or External HDD or Memory Card which is Affected.

Step Two:

How do I remove a computer virus?

If your computer is infected with a virus, you'll want to remove it as quickly as possible. A fast way to check for viruses is to use an online scanner, such as the Microsoft Safety Scanner. The scanner is a free online service that helps you identify and remove viruses, clean up your hard disk, and generally improve your computer's performance.
If you're not sure whether your computer has a virus, see How can I tell if my computer has a virus? to check for some telltale signs. To try a different online scanner, follow the links to other companies that provide them on the Windows Security software providers webpage.

If you can connect to the Internet

If you can reach a website using your web browser, run an online scan.

To run the Microsoft Safety Scanner

  1. Go to the Microsoft Safety Scanner webpage to download the scanner.
  2. Click Download Now, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

If you can't connect to the Internet

If you can't get to the Microsoft Safety Scanner online, try restarting your computer in safe mode with networking enabled.

To restart in Safe Mode with networking enabled

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. When you see the computer manufacturer's logo, press and hold the F8 key.
  3. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode with Networking, and then press Enter.
  4. Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator rights.
  5. Follow the steps above to run the Microsoft Safety Scanner.
For more information about different startup modes, see Start your computer in safe mode.
If you still can't access the Internet after restarting in safe mode, try resetting your Internet Explorer proxy settings. The following steps reset the proxy settings in the Windows‌ registry so that you can access the Internet again.

To reset Internet Explorer proxy settings

  1. In Windows 7, click the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type run, and then, in the list of results, click Run.
    -or-
In Windows Vista, click the Start button Picture of Start button, and then click Run.
    -or-
In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Copy and paste or type the following text in the Open box in the Run dialog box:
    reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyEnable /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
  3. Click OK.
  4. In Windows 7, click the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type run, and then, in the list of results, click Run.
    -or-
In Windows Vista, click the Start button Picture of Start button, and then click Run.

In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Run.
  5. Copy and paste or type the following text in the Open box in the Run dialog box:
    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyServer /f
  6. Click OK.
Restart Internet Explorer and then follow the steps listed previously to run the scanner.

Remove a virus manually

Sometimes a virus must be removed manually. This can become a technical process that you should only undertake if you have experience with the Windows registry and know how to view and delete system and program files in Windows.
First, identify the virus by name by running your antivirus program. If you don't have an antivirus program or if your program doesn't detect the virus, you might still be able to identify it by looking for clues about how it behaves. Write down the words in any messages it displays or, if you received the virus in email, write down the subject line or name of the file attached to the message. Then search an antivirus vendor's website for references to what you wrote down to try to find the name of the virus and instructions for how to remove it.

Recovery and prevention

After the virus is removed, you might need to reinstall some software or restore lost information. Doing regular backups on your files can help you avoid data loss if your computer becomes infected again. If you haven't kept backups in the past, we recommend that you start now.

Perfect Way to Hide a Folder

Hi friends and follower today i will tell you how to hide a folder in best way without using folder option.
Everybody knows that when we hide a folder using folder option it can be available for everyone. Any user that uses your computer can see that folder by uncheck the setting form folder option. But don’t worry here is a better way to do this. You adopt this way and no one can access your personal folder on your pc.
I will tell with snapshots.
For example I have a folder with named personal and I want to hide it. Just see below picture and note my folder's name and location.
Note: this is my Personal folder and location of it. In your case you can place it anywhere in your drive. My folder placed in D drive.
Now go to RUN or click on start menu --> Accessories and open Command Prompt. If you are using RUN then write CMD and press enter.
Command Prompt looks like this.
Source: Blog
Now write the following command in command prompt d: as I wrote in snap. And press ENTER.
& you will redirect in D drive of your pc.
Source: Blog
Now in command Prompt enter the following command (dir) to see the directory structure of D drive you will find there the folder that you want to hide. Enter (dir) and Press ENTER as in snap
Source: Blog
Now enter the command (attrib +s +h +r +a folder name) this command will hide your folder & no one can access it using folder option. See below snapshot to understand this process.
Source: Blog
After entering the command folder has been hide you can see below in snap.
Now for unhide do same process, just only one thing you have to do with command for un hiding. ( attrib -s -h -r -a folder name) this will un hide your folder. remember you have to enter command without bracket. i put these only for demonstration purpose. See below snapshot to show back you folder.
Source: Blog
TIPS For This: always remember folder name and location when you hide using this way. because if you forget you cannot get it back.
This is a perfect way hide folder. no need of any software in this way.

Simple Steps to Convert a Flash Drive into Bootable

Change is the only thing which never changes, so does technology. Everyday some improvement in technology takes place and helps the human race to enjoy optimum comfort. Netbook is one among that. You need not carry your heavy laptop everywhere for your business meetings. This portable notebook is lightweight and easy to carry. But these notebooks don’t come with a disk drive. When the preloaded OS is corrupted or doesn’t meet your requirements, you need to go in search of external hard drive to restore it. A simple solution to avoid such situation is to have a bootable flash drive.
A USB drive is not a bootable one as such. It has to be configured to load OS.
Following are the simple steps to convert a USB flash drive into bootable drive.
•Connect your flash drive to your desktop or laptop and format it in NTFS.
•Open command prompt in your Computer by one of the following ways
oClick Start, go to All programs, click accessories and open Command Prompt
Or
oType ‘CMD’ in the search menu in Start and press Ctrl + Shift+ Enter
Or
oOpen RUN (press windows key + R), type ‘CMD’ and hit Enter
•Enter following in the Command Prompt
DISKPART (then hit Enter)
LIST DISK (then hit Enter)
•All the disk number will appear on the screen. Now enter the disk number of your flash drive.
•Now type ACTIVE in the Command Prompt to make your USB drive active. Command Prompt will now display that your drive is active
•Type EXIT to leave the Command Prompt
•Insert the OS disc into the disc drive
•‘bootsect.exe’ must be installed to create boot sector in your USB drive. This .exe file is available with the OS
•Now open the Command Prompt and enter the following
F: CD BOOT (then hit Enter. F - Disk drive location, replace it with the location of your CD/DVD drive location)
CD BOOT (then hit Enter)
‘BOOTSECT.EXE/NT60 G:’ (G - location of the USB flash drive. Replace it with the location of your USB flash drive)

Your flash drive is now a bootable USB drive. Copy the OS in the CD to the flash drive. Now you can install OS in your netbook without any hassle.

Using the Magical COPY & PASTE in any DOS Prompt

This could be the shortest Hub I've ever written. It is actually a Windows Tip that I never knew existed. In a world were the DOS or command line prompt is almost non-existent, this tip may prove to be Golden.
My first experience with a personal computer was with a Radio Shack TRS-80. Five of these dinosaurs were sitting pretty on a corner away from the nerve wrecking and superfast 586 and Pentium I desktops. Thus I started my computer education with a command prompt.
Up to this day, I still have uses for the command or DOS prompt. And you my Dear reader... what would you do when your machine suddenly looses its graphical interface and your left with DOS window?
Anyway...
  1. Open your command prompt. This is found in your START menu or by typing "cmd" (without the quotes) into the run command.
  2. You'll know you did step 1 right if a black command window appears.
  3. Type 'dir/w' (w/o the quotes) into the command prompt
  4. Type 'www.amorsiko.com' (w/o the quotes) into the command prompt
  5. Now our goal is to copy the words 'www.amorsiko.com into the next command line or any other application like MS Word, Notepad.
  6. Right click on the command window.
  7. Choose 'Mark' from the options provided
  8. Highlight the words 'www.amorsiko.com' using the cursor and of course your mouse
  9. Then press the ENTER key
  10. To copy to the next command prompt, right click on the command window and choose PASTE
  11. To copy to any other application, use the standard Control + V or Ctrl V shortcut key.
Easy wasn't it. I bet you didn't know that? It really is not much use in real life but when one of your jobs is fixing computers especially dinosaur computers (oh lots here in our place still use one)... a little magic with command line goes a long long long way.
Oh yes... and one more thing if you ever did go to that url...
you know that www.amorsiko.com thing...
and you know what a leader board is... try clicking on some of those blue words... LOL. A little something for me for sharing this tip. HAHAHAHA!!! You choice actually. Quite nearing the payout...

How to remove a short cut virus from your Flash drive or your Drive

The Breifing

Shortcut viruses are malicious viruses that often times reek havoc in the world of soft copy, especially for individuals who're computer knowledge impaired or in other words computer illiterate (CI); no offense. Shortcut viruses are often times transmitted to your computer through the internet and from then on to your flashdrive and whenever that infected drive plugs into a computer with a weak antivirus the pc may get infected even with a good antivirus it just might get by.
So your drive is infected and you want to retrieve your files; so here is a convenient way i know, and place emphasis on "convenient" because there are people out there that might want to dupe you into thinking they have some fancy software that can get your files recovered and your drive clean, which is true but all these softwares work trust me, but this method always does so it is more safe and convenient.
All right enough chit chat read these steps carefully before carrying out the procedure and make sure you double check before clicking "Enter"
as seen here
as seen here

These Steps

1. Insert your external drive into an uninfected computer and open it but don't click on any of the short cut files for this will only make matters worse. and dont worry about he computer just yet just make sure the antivirus up to date and is working properly; especially one of those good ones like BitDefender or Norton and Avira will do.
2. Open Command Prompt (cmd) where you will see the default path location. Type or copy and paste this formula: attrib -h -r -s /s /d E:\*.* ; "E" being the drive location make sure you have the correct location whether it be E, F, G etc. . . etc. Double check the formula to see if it is correct then click "Enter".
Wait for the default path to come up then you'll that it is finish. Close command prompt "cmd."
3. By now your antivirus should pick up the virus and is cleaning it or prompting you to clean it. Tell it yes and return to your drive. Right click the mouse and go to arrange icons by > type. Now if you notice you'll see your actual documents and some folders with the same names as your actual documents and some with funny names. Now delete these folders /shortcuts with and any file you don't recognize especially that "x.mpeg" file thing if you see this then you have the shortcut virus. This is best done in Now in deleting you'll notice pop ups just click "Ok" and until no more comes up if there are a lot of high lighted icons then do it in rows until your all done.
Remove the drive and re- insert it to make sure their not there any more . and if they are then I recommend you to check out this link http://suhailrebornhero.blogspot.com

How to Delete a Virus in your USB drive or Flashdisk

What is a Virus and how does it infects your Computer?

Simply put a Virus is a Malicious Software (MalWare) created by people who wants to destroy.. your files, your computer, your flashdisk...
(NOTE: Virus and Malware will be used in this article interchangeably)
Now, How do there Malware infects your computer?
  • Downloading pornographic materials, games and applications in untrusted websites
  • Downloading files through peer-to-peer programs (e.g. limewire, torrent, ares)
  • inserting your flashdisk to other infected computer and inserting it back to your computer without scanning it first
These are just some of the ways in which malware infects your computer.

Common Malware infections in the flashdisk or USB drive

These are common malwares that infects your usb drive/flashdisk.
  • Autorun.inf
  • New Folder.exe
  • Trojan Virus
  • Ravmon.exe
  • .vbs scripts
Preventing Malware from infecting your computer should start from the owner itself. You can't just say to your computer "OK I already installed the best Anti-Virus on you and you already have the latest virus definitions. Your on your own now!" What I mean is, it's the responsibility of the owner to prevent infections to your computer whether it be from another usb drive or from the internet.

Ways in preventing Virus infection

As the saying "Prevention is better than cure" and it's very true when it comes to computers. Preventing a malware from infecting your computer would save you a lot and i mean A LOT of headache-free hours..
Now, How do I prevent these nasty bugs from infecting my computer you say?
NOTE: If your Antivirus couldn't delete the malware you can Safe Mode you computer by following this:
  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually; Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  3. Select Run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  4. Then scan your computer using an updated Antivirus.
  • SCAN FIRST! Each and everytime you insert a USB drive/flash disk on your computer don't forget to scan it first. (Given that your Antivirus is up-to-date).
  • You can also install utilities that will check the flash disk that you inserted for malware infection. Search it on Major Geeks (this is not an affiliate site)

What if it wasn't prevented?

Well, that's the purpose of this section..:)
So, how to we remove these nasties from our computer systems?
There are ALOT of ways to remove them, but you should also be prepared for the worst case scenario in which the infection is severe and the only thing you can do is back-up your important files and format your computer.
I'll cite some common ways in removing these malware
AND since I dont' have all the answers to your queries, I posted these recommended sites that will help you in your fight againts the malware menace from your pc.
  • TechGuy - this site is full of information about removing malwares (you might want to search first to minimize the hassle in asking for help-maybe you're not the first one to experience such tragedy)
  • Major Geek support forum - this site helps people who had their pc infected by malwares (please follow their regulations)
  • SpywareInfo support forum - this site is also a support forum to those with malware infection
NOTE: To further maximize efficiency,
  • You should install HijackThis (product info is on their site).
  • If you download the Executable version please make sure to place it in a permanent folder. HijackThis makes backups of anything fixed and the backups might be deleted accidentally if the program is run from a temporary folder.
  • Run HijackThis, click "Scan and Save Log", and save the logfile produced. Please do not fix any entries with HijackThis unless a helper tells you to. Most of the entries in the log will be legitimate, or even critical to the operation of your computer.
  • IMPORTANT! The log file is the one that you will post to these sites so that the malware expert can diagnose the situation..
Hope this helps! God bless!

Using command prompt "attrib" to check for Viruses or Malware

Microsoft Command Prompt "attrib" is a very useful tool to check if your hard drives even your flashdisks have been infected by a virus.
You will know if a Malware is inside your hard drive just by looking at the attributes of each files and the file that has the attributes of +s +h +r
The function of attrib is to set and remove file attributes (read-only, archive, system and hidden).

Launch attrib

To start attrib
  1. Go to Start Menu > Run
  2. Type cmd (cmd stands for command prompt)
  3. Press Enter key
The Command Prompt will appear showing us where is our location in the directory.
command prompt showing the current location in the directory
command prompt showing the current location in the directory

Using attrib

To use attrib
  1. Go to the root directory first by typing cd\(because this is always the target of Malware / Virus)
2. Type attrib and press Enter key
after typing attrib, all the attributes of all the files (excluding folders) will be shown
after typing attrib, all the attributes of all the files (excluding folders) will be shown
In this example, I have two files that are considered as malware.
Note that there are two files which I outlined in red (SilentSoftech.exe and autorun.inf). Since you cannot see this file nor delete it (because the attributes that was set on these files are +s +h +r)
  1. +s - meaning it is a system file (which also means that you cannot delete it just by using the delete command)
  2. +h - means it is hidden (so you cannot delete it)
  3. +r - means it is a read only file ( which also means that you cannot delete it just by using the delete command)
Now we need to set the attributes of autorun.inf to -s -h -r (so that we can manually delete it)
  1. Type attrib -s -h -r autorun.inf ( be sure to include -s -h -r because you cannot change the attributes using only -s or -h or -r alone)
  2. Type attrib again to check if your changes have been commited
  3. If the autorun.inf file has no more attributes, you can now delete it by typing del autorun.inf
  4. Since SilentSoftech.exe is a malware you can remove its attributes by doing step 1 and step 3(just change the filename) ex. attrib -s -h -r silentsoftech.exe

a) I typed the attrib command with the -s -h -r setting b) the result after I pressed enter - autorun.inf has no attributes left
a) I typed the attrib command with the -s -h -r setting b) the result after I pressed enter - autorun.inf has no attributes left
There you have it!!!!
NOTE : when autorun.inf keeps coming back even if you already deleted it, be sure to check your Task Manager by pressing CTRL + ALT + DELETE ( a virus is still running as a process thats why you cannot delete it. KILL the process first by selecting it and clicking End Process.
NOTE: You can also apply the attrib -s -h -r command to all the partition of your computer, drive D: drive E: drive F: (all of your drives). For example. for drive D, just type "D:" (minus the double quote) then you can see that your current drive is D.. type there the command "attrib -s -h -r *.exe" for exe files and "attrib -s -h -r *.inf" and then delete the file by "del autorun.inf".
Hope this helps!!!!! :) Jah bles!

Negative List Updation Patch - Updated upto 31/01/2013

This patch file updates the negative list available in Sanchay Post software. To confirm updation, use the "Database Discrepancies >> NSC >> Details of Negative List Updation" option available in DBAnalyzersoftware.

The file 'NL_20130131.exe' should be copied to DBAnalyzer folder and executed after completion of day's transactions. This will update the negative list upto 31/01/2013  in Sanchay Post.

In addition to Negative List, updations relating to PINCODE details are also done in the database. Hence, execution of this patch will take longer than the usual updation time. System Administrators should ensure that the server is not switched off till successful execution of the patch.
